ICC Champions Trophy 2025
The controversy surrounding the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy between India and Pakistan centers on the Indian cricket team’s jerseys. Due to political tensions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initially opposed having Pakistan’s name on the jerseys. However, the BCCI later agreed to adhere to ICC guidelines, which mandate displaying the host nation’s name on all teams’ jerseys.
Due to security concerns, India will play all its matches in the UAE rather than Pakistan, leading to disagreements with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This tournament will be the first to follow a “Hybrid Model,” with matches held in Pakistan and the UAE, generating significant debate and media attention.
The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy will take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025. The eight-team tournament will feature 15 One Day International (ODI) matches, played across venues in Pakistan and Dubai. The tournament format divides the teams into two groups: Group A includes Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, while Group B features Afghanistan, Australia, England, and South Africa.
INDIA AND PAKISTAN CONTROVERSY
The BCCI initially refused to print ‘Pakistan’ on Team India’s jersey for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, the ICC insisted on compliance with tournament guidelines, leading the BCCI to clarify later that they would include ‘Pakistan’ on the jerseys. This issue underscored the political tensions between the two nations, with India opting to play its matches in Dubai due to security concerns while the rest of the tournament takes place in Pakistan.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed rumors that the BCCI wanted ‘Pakistan’ removed from the Champions Trophy 2025 logo on their jerseys, confirming that Team India will comply with ICC regulations.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the updated schedule for the 2025 Champions Trophy tour, deliberately excluding cities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). This decision came after strong objections from the BCCI regarding the inclusion of disputed territories.
The tournament trophy will begin its journey across the eight participating nations, commencing in Islamabad, Pakistan, in November 2024. Meanwhile, Pakistan has yet to announce its final squad for the tournament. The delay stems from an ankle injury sustained by Saim Ayub while fielding during the second Test against South Africa in January. Initially prescribed six weeks of rest, Ayub later sought medical consultation in London to recover in time for Pakistan’s highly anticipated Champions Trophy match against India on February 23.

HYBRID MODEL IN ICC CHAMPIONS TROPHY 2025
The Hybrid Model for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy was introduced to navigate political tensions by scheduling India’s matches at neutral venues, such as the UAE, while Pakistan hosts the remaining fixtures. This approach ensures both countries’ participation without compromising their respective stances.
First implemented in the 2023 Men’s Asia Cup, the Hybrid Model allows the tournament to proceed smoothly, enabling fans to enjoy the competition without political interference.
A PCB official, speaking anonymously, expressed concerns that politics could overshadow the sport.
“The BCCI’s actions are perceived as intertwining politics with cricket, which is seen as detrimental to the spirit of the game. From refusing to travel to Pakistan to allegedly opposing the host nation’s name on their jerseys, the decisions have sparked controversy. We hope the ICC, as the global governing body, will intervene to ensure fair play and uphold the principles of cricket.”
India will play all its matches in Dubai. If India does not reach the final, the title match will be held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Pakistan will host 11 out of the 15 tournament matches. The first semi-final, featuring India should they qualify, will take place in Dubai on March 4. The second semi-final on March 5 in Lahore will feature Pakistan if they reach the top four. Should India advance to the final on March 9, the championship match will be held in Dubai.
PAKISTAN FACES STADIUM DELAYS FOR CHAMPIONS TROPHY 2025
The ICC announced that ticket sales for the Pakistan leg of the 2025 Champions Trophy will begin on Tuesday, despite ongoing renovation work at the host nation’s stadiums. Venues in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi are still under preparation, with a handover deadline set for January 30. However, construction delays are raising serious concerns about Pakistan’s readiness to host the prestigious tournament.
The resignation of ICC CEO Geoff Allardice was reportedly linked to the mismanagement and delays in preparations for the Champions Trophy. Concerns over the unprepared stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi were compounded by budget overruns and logistical issues during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA. Financial mismanagement during that tournament added to scrutiny, ultimately leading to Allardice’s decision to step down just a week before the Champions Trophy was set to begin.
Construction at the Lahore and Karachi stadiums is still in progress, with multi-storied enclosures, dressing rooms, and hospitality boxes yet to be completed. Additionally, work on fencing, floodlight installations, and seating arrangements remains unfinished. Pakistani media has highlighted significant financial and logistical challenges in preparing for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, particularly budget constraints affecting renovations at a key stadium in Lahore. These delays have sparked national concerns about Pakistan’s ability to successfully host the tournament.
Despite these obstacles, the PCB remains committed to ensuring that the tournament proceeds as planned, showcasing Pakistan’s resilience and dedication to hosting a successful global cricket event.
